Mr B's review
“An absolute knockout. Cosby is fast becoming the king of crime fiction and his new novel should seal his place at the top table.
After a couple of truly excellent thrillers, Cosby expands his range with his latest, All The Sinners Bleed, moving into the realm of procedural crime… And it will be no surprise to anyone who’s read him before to find that he is an absolute master of this as well.
What starts with a school shooting soon sprawls into an almost unbearably suspenseful serial killer story that rings with all the terror of The Silence of the Lambs. This novel goes to some seriously dark places but they are all handled with the utmost skill – despite the often gruesome nature of the events depicted, it never once feels gratuitous or manipulative.
In Titus, Cosby has also created a fabulous protagonist who I think still has stories to explore – I would love to see this become a series! As well as a convincing and layered character with a haunting backstory, Titus serves as a great foil to explore what life is like for Black people in law enforcement, and all the complexities that situation brings, particularly in the US.
All The Sinners Bleed reads like a mash-up of Dennis Lehane and Attica Locke – fresh, real and with a classic, throwback feel to it. This is the novel that should send this brilliant writer’s career stratospheric.” – Tom M

A BLACK SHERIFF. A SERIAL KILLER.
AND A SMALL TOWN READY TO COMBUST.
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, Charon has had only two murders. After years of working as an FBI agent, no one knows better than Titus that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface.
But a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student. The student is then fatally shot by Titus’s deputies.
As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes, and a serial killer who has been hiding in plain sight, haunting the dirt lanes and woodland clearings of Charon. With the killer’s possible connections to a local church and the town’s harrowing history weighing on him, Titus tries to project confidence about closing the case while concealing a painful secret from his own past. At the same time, he also has to contend with a far-right group that wants to hold a parade in celebration of the town’s Confederate history.
Charon is Titus’s home and his heart. But where faith and violence meet, there will be a reckoning.
